Dr. Eliu Huerta is Lead for Translational AI and Computer Science Leader 1 at Argonne National Laboratory, and a CASE Senior Scientist in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. He is a theoretical astrophysicist, mathematician, and computer scientist whose research sits at the intersection of physics, artificial intelligence, and extreme-scale computing.
His interdisciplinary work focuses on applying advanced AI and computational methods to grand challenges in astrophysics, cosmology, observational astronomy, and complex multi-scale and multi-physics systems, including materials science discovery for energy storage and conversion. He has made pioneering contributions to the integration of AI with high-performance computing, scientific visualization, and large-scale data analysis, and leads the development of open-science supercomputing platforms that enable the use of foundation AI models across scientific domains.
Dr. Huerta holds a Master of Advanced Study in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and a PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics from the University of Cambridge. He is principal investigator on multiple NSF- and DOE-funded interdisciplinary projects advancing AI-driven discovery in data-intensive scientific experiments.
Committed to education and mentorship, Dr. Huerta has mentored tens of students from high school through graduate levels and is dedicated to training the next generation of AI and computational science leaders. He has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, available in Google Scholar and INSPIRE HEP, and is an advocate for translational AI, working to bridge fundamental research and real-world impact through open, collaborative, and scalable computational infrastructures.
